No coding skills needed: The top 3 AI skills for decision-makers in 2026

In the NEW WORK CHAT Podcast (#432) with Gabriel Rath, academy4.ai founder Marcel Pesch analyses the three most important AI skills for executives in 2026. The article highlights why coding is becoming secondary, why "Human in the Loop" is a genuine survival strategy, and how physical performance forms the foundation for sustainable AI leadership.

When Gabriel Rath recently invited me to his renowned podcast NEW WORK CHAT (episode #432), right at the start he asked me one of the most pressing questions of our time: “Which three core competencies must leaders and decision-makers absolutely master in the year 2026 to avoid falling behind in the AI era?”

My answer surprised many: Programming was not among them.

While many companies are still desperately trying to train their executive suites to become hobby programmers, the reality of the market has shifted long ago. In an era where autonomous AI agents and no-code systems like n8n take over the technical execution, the bar for excellent management is shifting radically.

Gabriel described our conversation as an “AI Leadership Masterclass in podcast form”. Here are the key core arguments and insights from the episode.

1. Process Orchestration instead of writing code

The most important skill of the future is not writing syntax, but systemic thinking in business processes.

Decision-makers must be able to lead a company like a conductor: they need to identify where operational work can be taken over by machines and at which interfaces humans define the strategic framework. Anyone who views AI merely as a nice text tool remains stuck in the 85% dilemma of pure gimmicks. On the other hand, those who integrate AI deeply into the existing process landscape scale value creation in record time.

2. “Human in the Loop” is not a buzzword, but a survival strategy

A key focus of our discussion was the role of humans in a highly automated working world. The term “Human in the Loop” is misunderstood in many boardrooms as an annoying safety requirement. In truth, it is the fundamental secret of success.

As we have already shown in our analysis of Homo Agenticus, the unreflective outsourcing of cognitive work (cognitive offloading) leads to the gradual loss of one's own analytical capabilities.

In the AI process, humans are not the executors, but the final quality and ethics authority.

Only when experienced experts critically question the outputs of AI systems, provide control impulses, and preserve the context does true excellence emerge without loss of quality.

3. Physical Readiness: Body First, Business Second

A topic that is rarely discussed in classic business podcasts, but represents a fundamental pillar for us at academy4.ai: your own physical and mental performance.

In the podcast, we talked, among other things, about cryochambers, biohacking, and targeted regeneration. Why? Because the frequency and pace of digital transformation place an enormous cognitive load on executives. Anyone who neglects their own body will burn out within a very short time in an accelerated economy.

Artificial intelligence only makes you more productive if you possess the mental energy to lead it strategically. Body first, business second.

Listen in now: NEW WORK CHAT #432

In the podcast, we didn't just talk about the economy, but also about what schools, universities, and politics must concretely do now to prepare the next generation for this reality.

Conclusion: Leadership in Transition

The future does not belong to the leaders with the best programming skills. It belongs to those who confidently orchestrate AI systems, keep humans at the centre, and sustainably protect their own performance.

In your view, which skills are currently the most important in everyday leadership? Have you already clearly defined the topic of “Human in the Loop” in your AI workflows?
