Digital Natives are not AI Natives: Why Gen Z urgently needs strategic AI literacy

A recent study by the TH Nuremberg dispels the myth that Generation Z is automatically AI-savvy. The article analyzes the skills gap between intuitive use and strategic applicability, and introduces the new collaboration between academy4.ai and Anastasia Barner, which brings AI competence to Gen Z on an equal footing.

Marcel Pesch

“Digital Natives are not AI Natives.”

This single sentence gets straight to the heart of the greatest illusion in the current debate surrounding young digital talent.

For years, a convenient misconception prevailed in executive suites and HR departments: “After all, Gen Z grew up with smartphones, TikTok, and social media. They can figure out Artificial Intelligence all by themselves. They don’t need us.”

A fatal fallacy.

The bare numbers: Intuitive use is not professional competence

A new study led by Prof. Dr. Yasmin Weiß (TH Nuremberg) titled “GenZ and GenAI: A Good Match?” now empirically dispels this myth:

  • Only 58% of Gen Z respondents feel truly confident in their professional use of AI tools.

  • 28.4% explicitly describe their own application competence as having “room for improvement.”

  • 13% feel completely insecure and fear falling behind in an AI-driven working world.

At the same time, over 60% of young adults state that Artificial Intelligence will significantly influence their professional future and daily work life.

A dangerous gap is yawning here: while Gen Z naturally uses tools like ChatGPT or Perplexity in their daily lives, they do so predominantly intuitively and selectively. What is missing is strategic skill augmentation: the knowledge of how to use AI not just as a better search engine replacement, but as a real sparring partner for complex problem-solving, decision-making, and automated workflows.

Looking back: The Millennial dilemma must not be repeated

As Millennials, we grew up two decades ago with the emergence of the commercial internet. Yet back then, no one in the education system or in companies taught us how to use the web strategically, productively, and value-creatingly.

We had to painstakingly acquire everything ourselves. Through years of trial and error, we wasted countless hours because there were no real learning spaces and no structured guidance.

Precisely this organizational failure must not happen again to Generation Z with the key technology of AI.

Anyone who is 20 years old today and entering professional life will interact with AI systems every single day for the next 45 years of their life. The question is no longer whether they use AI, but how well, how critically, and how productively they do so.

The solution: academy4.ai x Anastasia Barner

To close this gap sustainably, traditional frontal lectures, dusty training manuals, or mandated corporate presentations are of no use at all. Gen Z learns differently: at eye level, hands-on, interactive, and collaborative.

That is why we at academy4.ai are launching a pioneering cooperation with Anastasia Barner – founder of FeMentor, one of the most influential voices of Generation Z and a top expert in New Work and talent development.

Together, we combine the deep AI infrastructure expertise of academy4.ai with Anastasia’s unique access to young talent and businesses. We are building learning spaces and formats that are different. That are new. And that speak exactly the language this generation needs to make the step from mere user to competent Agent-Architect.

Conclusion: AI empowerment is the new employer duty

The study results from TH Nuremberg also show: over 46% of respondents make good AI training opportunities a key criterion when choosing a job. Young talents are specifically looking for employers who teach them how to use future technologies confidently.

Those who empower Gen Z today, instead of leaving them alone with the technology, are building the change agents of tomorrow.

How do you experience Gen Z in your company or team? Are your young colleagues already using AI strategically – or do you also sense a desire for genuine empowerment at eye level?
